2008-09 NCAA Football Family Atmosphere Rankings

The top two spots remain the same in the second annual CFBLive! Football Family Atmosphere Rankings. The Football Family List becomes more dysfunctional beyond these paternal programs. Due to head coaching changes and academic penalties based on the APR (Academic Progress Rate), a host of programs disappeared while others made their debut.

Recognition for building strong character and unity in student-athletes doesn’t have to come at the expense of winning. In fact, most of the programs in the 2008-2009 rankings reflect the best of both worlds. We’ve identified key elements to define the intrinsic family feeling created in college football.

Family atmosphere begins with the head coach and his staff. Their guidance, integrity, and personality set the stage for their athletes and employees.

The staff’s leadership bolsters individuals and teams, whether they are facing adversity or handling success. Using input from across the country, we’ve built a list of programs that foster family atmospheres.

Family atmosphere plays a major role in an athlete’s integration with the school and team. This occurs during a time when young athletes are making the transition from home to college. In the end, the football family bond ensures teammates feel included, complete coursework, and aren’t distracted by acts that would otherwise get them grounded. Like any other family, these athletes are given the support to lead successful lives.

Camaraderie shared between athletes can carry a program through challenging times, as evidenced by the many programs on this list that seem to get stronger as the season progresses. Athletes that build trust within one another are more likely to experience success and accomplish their goals.

Recruiting student athletes with these values before they arrive on campus contributes to a healthy atmosphere. However, it’s athletes with troubled pasts that often reap the greatest rewards.

Young student-athletes leaving home for the first time want a comfortable destination that can make their college transition easier. A well-adjusted athlete performs better in school and on the gridiron. This aspect is often overlooked within sports programs, yet it has a significant impact on the long term well being of both the individual and the program as a whole.

THE 2008-09 TOP FAMILY ATMOSPHERE PROGRAMS
Programs going through head coaching changes this year were not eligible for this list. Those that don’t meet the minimum Academic Progress Rate are not qualified for the rankings either. Most of the programs listed below have had their core coaching staff in place for multiple years, but this is not a prerequisite. Data for determining the top programs was collected after January 2007.

Last season West Virginia (Rich Rodriguez), University of Hawaii (June Jones), Auburn (Tommy Tuberville), and Army (Stan Brock) all made the Top 10. This year those coaches and programs are going in another direction and four other programs have replaced them.

1) OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY BEAVERS
Head of the Family: Mike Riley
2008 Ranking: #1
2007 Ranking: #1

Whether the offense is growing beards as a sign of solidarity or the athletes are raising money and awareness for underprivileged children, head coach Mike Riley is the person setting the foundation. Coaches around the league send transfer players to Riley because of the person he is. One of the big stories in previous years was the kidney transplant that graciously went from the offensive coordinator to the offensive line coach’s wife. She’s doing well in 2009…

2) PENN STATE NINTANY LIONS
Head of the Family: Joe Paterno
2008 Ranking: #2
2007 Ranking: #2

Joe Paterno has cultivated an atmosphere of family and trust in State College, PA. The loyalty of defensive coordinator Tom Bradley over the last 29 years illustrates the family aura. In simple terms Bradley explains, “There's just a unique family atmosphere between the staff, the players and the community.” Paterno and Bradley are known for taking immediate corrective action when athletes find trouble off the field and making sure they don’t stray.

3) TEXAS LONGHORNS
Head of the Family: Mack Brown
2008 Ranking: #3
2007 Ranking: #9

The Texas program has enjoyed over a decade of strong leadership and coaching from head coach Mack Brown. Brown ensures his athletes avoid off-field distractions in a place where football players are treated with reverence. In addition, Brown is an advocate to several causes including the Texas Council on Family Violence.

4) WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS
Head of the Family: Jim Grobe
2008 Ranking: #4
2007 Ranking: #13

There aren’t many coaches more respected for their (I THINK it’s “their” and not “his”… not entirely sure) integrity and ability to mold youth than Jim Grobe. Grobe has passed up more glamorous head coaching positions to stay at Wake Forest and signed a long term contract. He’s proof that nice guys can finish on top because his staff and athletes persevere through tough times using teamwork and trust.

5) GEORGIA BULLDOGS
Head of the Family: Mark Richt
2008 Ranking: #5
2007 Ranking: #6

Mark Richt uses religious values, weekly ‘Family Nights’, and individual accountability to instill a family atmosphere. Richt’s personal lessons came while playing at the University of Miami when off field troubles derailed his career. Since then his coaching style leads his student-athletes to make smart choices on and off the field.

6) RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS
Head of the Family: Greg Schiano
2008 Ranking: #6
2007 Ranking: Not Ranked

The term family atmosphere is easy to apply to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have more siblings playing in their program than nearly every major conference program. During recruiting visits, most recruits admit the primary theme they discovered was the family atmosphere. Greg Schiano extended his contract through 2016, and his pledge to his athletes that he’ll stay for them carries more weight than many other well-respected coaches in the business.

7) VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES
Head of the Family: Frank Beamer
2008 Ranking: #7
2007 Ranking: #4

It’s been over a year since the tragedy on Blacksburg’s campus. Head Coach Frank Beamer has helped his student-athletes move past the horror and recommit themselves to school and football. His closest friends describe him as feisty and fatherly in the same sentence. Not everyone learns life lessons under Coach Beamer. Ask the Vicks. But overall Beamer is still one of the best at establishing a family feeling among his staff and players.

8) UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TROJANS
Head of the Family: Pete Carroll
2008 Ranking: #8
2007 Ranking: #8

Head Coach Pete Carroll lands on this list for a different reason than most. His charismatic, class act approach is a testament to a school located between downtown Los Angeles and Compton. The distractions are high, but Coach Carroll has regularly discussions with his players about accepting accountability and keeping the annual hype in perspective. Perhaps the biggest compliment comes from former athletes that maintain a brotherhood years after leaving the program.

9) EAST CAROLINA PIRATES
Head of the Family: Skip Holtz
2008 Ranking: #9
2007 Ranking: #12

Skip Holtz may have learned a trick or two from his father (Lou Holtz) about creating team unity and setting an example for athletes. His finest season of coaching occurred this year when his team struggled to a 3-3 start. Holtz didn’t change the playbook. He repaired the cohesiveness of the athletes and instilled an “us-against-the-world” mentality that led to the Conference Championship and Conference USA Coach of the Year Award.

10) NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS
Header of the Family: Bo Pelini
2008 Ranking: #10
2007 Ranking: Unranked

It’s not often a first year coach cracks the Top 10 list, but Bo Pelini has a long list of advocates on his behalf. He started off his first press conference by saying he would bring back Cornhusker tradition and the signature family atmosphere that had evaporated under the two prior regimes. Once the family atmosphere was restored at Nebraska, it was easy to get players to buy into Pelini’s other two ingredients toward winning: Effort and Attitude.

Honorable Mention List:

11) Ohio State: Jim Tressel isn’t the epitome of cool, but he’s created a program based on old-fashioned values, trust and loyalty. Ohio State’s family atmosphere is founded on those values. (2007 Ranking, #11)

12) Louisiana Tech: It all begins with Head Coach and Athletic Director Derek Dooley. In just two seasons Dooley’s leadership has produced team unity that has led to unprecedented wins on the field and in academics. (2007 Ranking, unranked)

13) Ole Miss: When Houston Nutt resigned at Arkansas he took his ability to create team unity and a belief in winning to Ole Miss. Few recruits leave their official visits without mentioning the family atmosphere that surrounds his programs. (2007 Ranking, unranked)

14) Oklahoma: Bob Stoops isn’t a touchy-feely coach, but his former athletes give testimonials that he creates a setting where his athletes feel like family. (2007 Ranking, unranked)

15) Stanford: Jim Harbaugh began molding his coaches and players into a family by handing out gas station uniform shirts with the purpose of building a blue-collar bond throughout the team. (2007 Ranking, unranked)

    2. How can you give art a religion?? I am really disappointed about posts like these where we have to inculcate the feeling of brotherhood among our children!! How do we expect our kids to respect other religion if we don’t teach them by example?? I cannot see or comment any art in relationship to religion and I think that’s the worst thing a person who loves and respects art would do!! Let us learn to respect all religions if you want to co-exist in this beautiful world of ours!!

  3. And all of Al Reser's money can't make Reser Stadium complete.

  4. Well it can, but we prefer our stadium to be built where 80% of the funds are less then a million dollars. Its more symbolic as an effort by the entire fanbase, rather then just by one guy.

  5. What no ducks on this list? Could it be that the head of a family would not endanger the future of his players by playing them when badly injured?

  7. The ducks throw their players under the bus they don't ride in it, that is why the ducks aren't on the list, well that and the duck fans push visiting team fans over the railings like during the UCLA game. autzen is a dump and always will be because of the people that frequent it.

  9. RESPONSE TO USC COMMENT - USC made the list because Pete Carroll is one of the most beloved coaches by his players. To your point, there was a recent and rare issue with his quarterback that has already been noted for 2009. The treatment there wasn't very fatherly. We're always interested in examples of family atmosphere.

  10. Thee University of Nike doesn't have a rep in this pole? Weird. When your coach will send you out there against doctors recommendations to ruin your possible NFL career to win a couple of college games. You might feel like they don't really care about as much as they're just using you. Sorry Ucker

    ReplyDelete
  11. What's with the duck banter, aren't they a hockey team?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Nike and the university of oregon thrive on family. Families exploited by sweatshop labor practices.

    ReplyDelete
  13. hey Mike Bellotti is a family friendly sort of guy. After all, he did keep his son on the team after the kid got two drunken driving convictions. Name one other coach who would keep a kid in the program after two convictions.

  14. The ducks are very family oriented. Unfortunately, the family member they emulate is the head coach's wife.

  15. "I know that Oregon State may not have the best academics as far as reputation as other schools that I was considering, but Oregon State felt like the right school for me."--Michael Philip (new recruit)...classic! "Family Friendly"...yeah, like the embarrassing, drunk, uncle. Maybe the abusive old grandpa! What's family in CorTuckey, anyway? Like your sister's your cousin and girlfriend? Don't let the family sheep find out, she'll get jealous!

  16. Wow! from a Cal Bear perspective, I see the classless ducks have been at it again on this site. Is there any wonder the ducks are the least favorite team amongst all of the pac 10?

While OSU may not have the academic reputation of Cal, they certainly exceed Oregon.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thank you Cal Bear - from a Cal Aggie OSU fan.

  18. As a Beaver graduate Coach Riley is a great players coach. With the Rodgers brothers both out due to injuries during the Oregon game and with a month for Quizz shoulder to heal he still kept him out of the Sun Bowl against Pitt, when everyone was saying he would play. What more do we need to say. The word is integrity. Way to go Beavers look forward to another great season and proud to be an Alum of OSU!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Im pretty sure USC is the least favorite team in the pac-ten followed by UCLA.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If the Rodgers bros could have played they would off simple as that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Great to See the Beavers up there..I met some folks on their trip To State College last year
very nice fans and the kids seemed great and was heartened to see the big win over USC. Class program...

    ReplyDelete
  22. The Only Reason the University of Oregon was not on this list was because when the folks who came up with this list visited Autzen. They were not impressed with the Horticulture Students Growing Cannabis as landscaping around the stadium..They were not at all impressed with the discarded Syringes and Crack pipe's that littered the road to the stadium and the hobo's living under it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. U of O and USC are the least well liked programs in the PAC10, but at USC it is because of what they do on the field.

    ReplyDelete
  24. lol... some funny banter.

Go Beavs. Mike Riley deservse all the recognition he gets and then some.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Now Riley just needs to teach his "family" how to win on the road in September and they are all set

    ReplyDelete
  26. I also feel Oregon is the most hated team in the PAC-TEN, and I actually earned one of my degrees there. USC is a very close second because of what they do on the field; UO is first because of what their fans think they do on the field. Oregon State, on the other hand, has matured from its own turmoil of the days of Dennis Erickson to a quality athletic program with a quality staff making waves on the national landscape.

    ReplyDelete
  27. duck fan you make me laugh. All that money from uncle phil obviously doesn't purchase an informed fan. Mike Riley deserves the reputation he has as a great players coach and community member. On Civil War week he spends his time jogging the streets of campus and Corvallis, shaking hands with students and citizens of the town he loves. He grew up here. He wants to be here. He doesn't give a damn about accolades; he wants his players to be successful people in life after they leave his program and understands that being a role model for them is more important than w's. These are the reason he wins this award. And the reason he gets consistent 9 and 10 win seasons. Go Beavs!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I gladly give up the 9 or 10 game, all-time, civil war advantage just to call myself a Beaver fan. Mike Riley is the kind of coach to tell Sammie Stroughter to do what's right for himself first and let football take care of itself. Resting both Rodgers brothers in a bowl game...it's just the right thing to do. We leave "entitlement" football to the guys South on I-5.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Don't forget Coach Riley not throwing Alexis Serna under the bus. Class act all the way, I am proud to be an OSU (not an OS) alumnus and football fan.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow - take a good look at the top 10 list here and what it means - hallowed ground to be considered with the likes of Penn State, Texas, Georgia, Virginia Tech, - etc.

Humbling stuff - what a great tribute to Oregon State, Mike Riley and most importantly to the kids and families who choose Corvallis.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Being a UO Grad..I am ashamed of what MB did to Dixon and others last year. He is in it for himself.

    ReplyDelete
  32. On Nebraska's Pelini . . . He started off his first press conference by saying he would bring back Cornhusker tradition and the signature family atmosphere that had evaporated under the two prior regimes.

This isn't entirely accurate. The family atmosphere didn't evaporate under the previous two regimes. It evaporated under the last regime of clueless Bill Callahan and egomaniacal AD Steve Pederson. It may have taken a bit of a hit in '02 under Frank Solich, but it didn't completely evaporate. The '03 staff was very similar to the current staff: Bo Pelini, Barney Cotton, Ron Brown, Marvin Sanders, Carl Pelini and Jeff Jamrog were all on that staff and they all returned this year. The '03 staff had things going the right direction. They had a 9-3 regular season in the bag and a #14 ranked recruiting class on Rivals when Steve Pederson stepped in and made the biggest blunder in college football history by firing Frank Solich.

That was the exact moment that the family atmosphere evaporated at Nebraska. But you're dead-on accurate when you say Pelini has restored it.

    Go Big Red!

    ReplyDelete
  33. UGA? Are you kidding me? After last year's cocktail party an UGA cheerleader threw a turd at my 10 year old son. Fortunately it wasn't a direct hit and it just grazed his neck.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It may be important to note that this article addresses a family atmosphere within the team, and not the hospitality of the fan base to opposing fans.

One might think that they are related, but from personal experience, I don't think that they are.

In my years as a Texas Longhorn fan, I've visited from this list Rutgers, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Stanford as well as attending bowl games against USC and Virginia Tech. Obviously, Texas plays Oklahoma in Dallas annually.

Nebraska fans are enormously hospitable. We were well treated at both Rutgers and Stanford. USC fans were nice both before and after the Rose Bowl.

I had a bad experience with Virginia Tech fans in New Orleans in 1996, but that could be just a few bad apples.

Ohio State fans are horrific. By far the worst fans I have ever seen. This wasn't just a few bad apples. It is a cultural problem there. But their fans who came to Austin and went to the Fiesta Bowl seem to be a cut above the jerks that infest Columbus.

I'm in no position to comment on Sooner fans. The rivalry clouds the experience too much. I expect that they appear much worse to Texas fans (and vice versa) than is actually the case.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I take it that you've never actually attended a Georgia game. My 80 year old dad was threatened by drunk frat boys, and Richt has some serious off-the-field problems with his players. Might wanna re-think that list. Vandy deserves to be ranked higher than Georgia.

    ReplyDelete
  36. One important thing to also consider regarding OSU - All but one senior graduated this year and the team collectively over the past several years has a 81% graduation rate. This shows that the classroom is just as important as the field. Mike Riley is a leader not just a coach!

    ReplyDelete
  37. all you out there thinking belloti played dixon for himself are mistaken. it was dixon's (and his fathers) choice not to tell anyone outside the doctors office. Belloti left the decision in the hands of the kid and his parents.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Christian Birch, are you from Benton County????

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's funny the second OSU gets legitimate recognition, they immediately start talking trash. Mostly directed toward UO. Haha, classy. Definitely shows the "family" aspect of OSU...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Dennis Dixon wanted to try and play and the doctors said he could. It wasn't mike trying to do what was best for himself. The player said he could play so they gave it a shot.

At the UCLA game it was two oregon fans that went over the railing. It wasnt an oregon fan throwing a UCLA fan over.

Some one talked about how riley jogged around town and met fans during Civil War week... maybe he should have been game planning. Enough said

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm pretty sure it was an Oregon State fan that threw paint on a member of the Oregon marching band during the civil war. That's class

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'd say the way in which the family of Ducks handled the Todd Doxey situation this year, and that of the kid from last year...pretty much speaks for itself!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Many of you forget that after the 2006 season Mike Belloti thought that the team needed to go in a better direction so during the summer he took the team to camp harlow and the team bonded together and we all know what the ducks did in 2007 untill injuries ripped the team apart.

Oh...and 65-38 the roses are dead beaves

    ReplyDelete
  44. This poll loses ALL credibility by putting UGA in the top 5 and not ranking Florida State at all. Props are given to Mark Richt for his Christian values ... where do you think he learned that??? Richt by his own admission was not a very good boy when he first started coaching under Bobby. He learned family values from the master.

    ReplyDelete
  45. nebraska is on this list? this is the same team where the fans were throwing drinks on the players in '07 during a home game. fans were yelling at the players, telling them they did not deserve their uniforms. not to mention the death threats some of the players received from fans. sounds like a nice atmosphere

    ReplyDelete
  46. No Big Ten teams I see .... Do you honestly think Kirk Ferentz and the University of Iowa are not worthy of this list? What a joke!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Last I checked OSU was benefiting from a Nike contract as well. Go ahead and be proud of being "family friendly" us ducks have no problem making enemies on our way to the top. 65-38 remember water rats.

    ReplyDelete
  48. 10-win(less) Mike! Good job family man. Now live up to all the hype you are getting and win 10 games for once in your life!

    ReplyDelete
  49. University of Oregon is without a doubt the most despised and classless program of the
Pac-10 conference as a outsider from California who has visited both schools with
our team, OSU is head and shoulders above
Oregon in fan behavior and coaching expertise
and cogeniality. We love the atmosphere and the genuine fan endearment to their team and
the respect they bestow on we visitors at Reeser, the same cannot be said of U of O. The above posters who are making snide remarks of Coach
Riley, well typify what we as visitors see in our visits to Autzen Stadium!! Congratulations Coach Riley and your football
family you are well deserving and have done a marvelous job in Corvallis and presently we consider your program 2nd best to our SC program.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The reason beaver fans even lash out at duck fans at all is in retaliation to very ignorant and immature instigatory acts by these water foul.

On a side note, a nutria is actually the only water rat that I am aware of and it is an introduced species that has negative impacts on native flora, fauna, and riparian habitat. I make the motion that the University of Oregon's mascot is changed to the Nutria because of their similar effect on the environment around them.

If you had paid attention during history you would realize how instrumental the beaver was in the growth and developement of Oregon as a state. Trapping beaver for its valuable pelt was what initially attracted early pioneers to our great state. I am very proud of Mike Riley and the entire Oregon State athletic organization. Integrity, Respect, and Dignity are the three words that come to mind when I think of the athletic programs in place. Bob De Carolis will be a big loss if he ever leaves the Beaver family.

I would like to thank the unbiased sources for their support and recognition of the difference between a "class act" and the mentality that is exemplified by the University of Oregon and their fans.

    GO BEAVS!

  51. "65-38" How original!

Lets talk about who won 2/3 of the previous three Civil War games (2007: 38-31 & 2006: 30-28). Second best record in the PAC 10 over the last three seasons, only trailing USC. Nevermind, lets not since the past is well the past.

No we didn't get to smell the roses, but with the tradition and reputation that is being built it isn't too far off in my estimation.

This is apparently purely subjective tripe.

  53. I think you must look at how you define a family. In Eugene a comune is the closest thing most people know as a family. A cousin maybe a distant relative or your wife. Just because we view families differenly in different places doesn't mean they are wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Why the hell are ducks fans commenting on this site anyway? Sounds to me like they are jealous of any recognition OSU gets. I guess that's why many around the Pac-10 don't like the ucks, they are insecure dorks.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It seems that the Beav's and other nasty
Pac-10 posters have forgotten about the
very vile verbal slurs that were made by
the OSU seating section behind the Duck
bench as the Civil War game 2008.

Slurs towards Mike Bellotti...personal and family..

So bad that OSU had to issue and apology to
    the University of Oregon...!

Not sure why folks think the Ducks are dorks.
It could be jealousy. Define 'dork'.

  56. The University of Texas completed the 2009 season with its third Big 12 Championship, a berth in the BCS National Championship game and a final No. 2 national ranking. With 13 victories, UT recorded its ninth consecutive 10-win season, which is the second-longest streak in NCAA history. That streak is a reflection of the continuing success head coach Mack Brown has brought to a program that managed at least 10 wins just twice in the 14 years prior to his arrival in 1998.

  120. There are a number of ways to do it, each have their benefits and drawbacks. . . The best way is to use boiling water. Be careful though. I have a scar on the top of my foot from doing this. Boiling water cools pretty quickly though, so you only do damage to the intended area, but it does generally kill the roots.. . Torching. Burn the patio, assuming they are not recycled rubber, plastic, or other meltable/flammable materials. Most noxious weeds will not come back once they have been burnt, so if you use a blowtorch or such on them, problem solved. Just be careful with this method.. . Solarization. Put a couple sheets of plastic over the patio and weigh it down with bricks. It will take about a week, but it will kill weeds, weed seeds, and various micro-organisms that help plants grow.. . Salt. Technically a chemical. The big issue with salt is that it dilutes with water and can damage neighbouring plants too. If you have plants that you want near your patio or downhill from it, don't use salt.. . Pulling weeds. Sometimes, this actually has the opposite effect, depending on the situation. If you pull up loose dirt when you pull up the roots, you could actually be bringing more weed seeds to the surface and wind up with more than you had initially. However, if they aren't rooted well, this works.. . WOW and other corn-gluten based pre-emergent herbicides DO NOT WORK. They work fine for lawns, but for areas where there is not competition (open flower beds, vegetable gardens, patios, etc.) they have little or no effect. With patios, they are actually going to have the opposite effect. They will put nitrogen in between the tiles, so although they will delay the weeds from sprouting, they will fertilize them once they do.. . The other possibility, of course, is to plant something that you do want in the cracks. Creeping thyme, Irish moss, creeping sedum, etc. will outcompete the weeds once they are established.
